All sorts of stuff you want to know about BOCA foods.
BOCA meatless products are a line of soy-based foods— from burgers to sausages to chik'n and entrées. Because BOCA meatless products are made with the nutritious goodness of soy, they help deliver vital nutrients and protein your body needs— like protein, fiber, and calcium.
Sure, they taste great, but many BOCA products are also a good source of calcium, iron or fiber—helping you get the nutrients you need. All of our products fit into the USDA's Dietary Guidelines. These Guidelines recommend eating a variety of foods and beverages within the basic food groups, while choosing foods that limit your intake of saturated and trans fats as well as cholesterol. All BOCA products are lower in fat, saturated fat, have no trans fat per serving, and most are lower in calories and cholesterol per serving than traditional meat-based counterparts.
You bet! Select varieties are made with organic soy, natural ingredients and with no artificial flavors or preservatives. Look for them in the freezer aisle of the natural foods section, or in your natural foods store.
Check the "Best When Used By" date on the package (it's stamped on the end of the box.) This is the date a product should be purchased and used by so you can enjoy the best taste and texture.
Keep them stored frozen until you're ready to cook them. If they accidentally thaw, we don't recommend using them. That's because the heating instructions are based on starting with a frozen product.
These products from our traditional line are vegan (meaning they have no animal by-products): Chili, Vegan Burger, Chik'n Nuggets, Chik'n Patties, Spicy Chik'n Patties, and Ground Crumbles. In our natural line of products, both the Vegan Burger and Ground Crumbles are vegan. You can generally tell something is vegan by checking the ingredients to make sure that egg, milk and dairy ingredients aren't listed (something we recommend doing every time you shop).
We're committed to providing you with great-tasting products made with the highest-quality soy. It's a fact that much of the high-quality soy grown in the U.S. has been genetically engineered, so the traditional BOCA line of soy-based products may contain ingredients derived from these crops.
We realize that biotechnology is a concern for some people. That's why we introduced a line of products made with organic soy. BOCA foods made with organic soy do not include genetically engineered ingredients.
Here at BOCA, we believe that foods developed through biotechnology are safe, and there's broad scientific consensus on this. The FDA, USDA and EPA all stand firmly behind the safety of biotech products, as do a host of other health and nutrition organizations, such as the American Medical Association and the American Dietetic Association.
Yes, all BOCA products contain wheat gluten. We note this on our packages (check the ingredient label) to make it easier for wheat-sensitive people to know what's inside. If you're sensitive to certain food ingredients, it's best to always check the ingredients on every label, every time you purchase a product.
No, BOCA foods are not currently certified kosher/pareve.
Actually, a lot of our product packaging is recyclable. The paperboard outer packaging is recyclable wherever paper products are accepted for recycling. The inner plastic tray in our Italian Entrees packaging has the recycling symbol 1, and is recyclable in communities accepting this type of material. Unfortunately, BOCA's inner plastic wrap is not recyclable right now. However, we continue to explore opportunities to improve our recycling efforts.
Right now BOCA products are only available in the United States. At this time, we don't have plans to distribute internationally.
